We’re starting to enter that lull in the recruitment marketing world where clients stop advertising and candidates are more focused on Christmas party carnage than a career move. The widely accepted wisdom is that you hold off on advertising in December and then run it in January. It’s funny though, because when I worked in Ireland, December was the busiest time for recruiters. With thousands of skilled Irish people returning to Ireland for Christmas, it was a great time to remind them that there were plenty of excellent career moves at home. At the time, the Celtic Tiger was only starting to gain momentum, but whenever I return to Dublin at Christmas time, I’m still assaulted by various recruitment messages before I’ve even left the terminal.
It’s an interesting thing, accepted wisdom. It means you don’t really have to think about your decision, other people make it for you. With the rapidly changing demographics in the UK and the huge explosion of cheap flights, airports at Christmas are an ideal place to promote your message. Maybe it’s time to break with accepted wisdom and try something new.
